Understanding Evangelization

Evangelization shares the good news that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died and rose to save us from sin and bring us into life with God. Through this gift, the Holy Spirit helps someone share that news in a way others can hear and respond to. Its attention is to a person’s encounter with Christ; Mission especially attends to sharing him across communities and cultures. Listening, friendship, and a personal invitation can open a path into the Church’s life.

Acts 8:26–40 ↗

Philip meets the Ethiopian traveler

The image at the top of this page shows Philip approaching an Ethiopian traveler who is reading Isaiah. Philip begins with the passage and the question already before the traveler.

Then Philip opened his mouth and, beginning with this scripture passage, he proclaimed Jesus to him.

The Holy Spirit leads Philip to this encounter. Philip explains how Isaiah’s passage points to Jesus, and the traveler responds by asking for Baptism. Evangelization joins listening and explanation with an invitation into new life in Christ.

Evangelization in service of others

These ministries and programs may offer ways to serve through Evangelization. Speak with parish staff about where help is needed, how to prepare, and the parish’s volunteer process.

Parish evangelization and retreat teams

Help people encounter Christ through a parish evangelization course or retreat, such as ChristLife or The Rescue Project. Welcome, meals, invitations, discussion and prayer each offer ways to serve.

Ways volunteers may help

  • Welcome guests and help them feel free to ask questions.
  • Help with meals, invitations, room setup or course materials.
  • Support table conversations or prayer in the role for which the team has prepared you.

Begin with your parish

Ask the parish evangelization coordinator about its courses, retreats and volunteer teams. The coordinator can explain the preparation and responsibilities of each role.

Programs you may recognize

As you discern

Bring these experiences to prayer, Mass and the sacraments, and conversation with a priest or trusted guide in the faith. Look over time for love of God and neighbor, faithfulness to Church teaching, and the good of those you serve. Joy, difficulty, and others’ feedback can help you recognize patterns. Attend to what people hear about Jesus and how freely they can explore a response. If no example comes to mind, begin with the experience suggested below.

Recall a welcomed conversation about Jesus. What mattered to the other person, and what did you learn from their questions or response?

When an invitation is declined or faith grows slowly, how do you remain a friend and entrust the person’s response to God?

Something to try: Pray for someone who is open to talking about faith. Listen to their questions, share something true about following Jesus, and offer a welcome invitation. Stay in touch; reflect on what you learned from their response without treating acceptance as a measure of your worth.

Bring this to prayer

Saint Carlo Acutis in prayer.

Saint Carlo Acutis

Come, Holy Spirit. Help me speak of Jesus with honesty, warmth, and respect.

Teach me to listen before I answer and to accompany others with patient friendship.

Saint Carlo Acutis, pray for me.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Carlo was a young Italian Catholic who used his interest in computers to create an exhibition about Eucharistic miracles. He also helped others learn the faith and made the Eucharist central to his own life. His work shows how everyday interests and skills can become ways of sharing the Gospel, helping people encounter Christ through a clear message and a personal witness of faith.
