Discernment helps people recognize spiritual influences that draw them toward God or away from him. The Holy Spirit can help someone notice an impression, desire, or message and test its faithfulness to Christ. Scripture, Church teaching, prayer, and wise counsel guide that testing. Wisdom helps with a faithful way forward; Discernment pays particular attention to what is moving a person spiritually. It serves others while respecting their freedom and responsibility.
Consider the relationships and responsibilities already part of your life.

You listen carefully and ask questions when something seems unclear, rather than deciding too quickly what is going on.
You welcome a trusted person’s guidance when an impression or decision needs to be tested.
The image at the top of this page shows Solomon asking God for wisdom to serve the people entrusted to him. His request centers on a listening heart and the ability to distinguish good from evil.
Give your servant, therefore, a listening heart to judge your people and to distinguish between good and evil.
Discernment begins with receiving and listening. Solomon asks for understanding so that the people, rather than his own importance, will be served.
Paul names discernment of spirits among the Spirit’s gifts. Its exercise serves the community and must remain faithful to Jesus Christ.
Charisms are gifts of the Holy Spirit for building up the Church and serving others. Love is their measure, and their discernment includes the guidance of the Church’s pastors.
Prudence helps us discern the good and choose appropriate means; it offers a related foundation for responsible decisions.
John calls Christians to test spiritual claims by their faithfulness to Jesus Christ and the apostles’ witness.

Bring these experiences to prayer, Mass and the sacraments, and conversation with a priest or trusted guide in the faith. Look over time for love of God and neighbor, faithfulness to Church teaching, and the good of those you serve. Joy, difficulty, and others’ feedback can help you recognize patterns. Give particular attention to how spiritual impressions are tested, including occasions when your first interpretation changes. If no example comes to mind, begin with the experience suggested below.
Recall a spiritual impression you initially trusted. What became clearer when you tested it through prayer, Scripture, counsel, and the actual circumstances?
When someone sees a situation differently from you, how do you help them seek God while leaving their decision in their hands?
Something to try: Bring a real spiritual impression to prayer and a trusted guide in the faith. Name what supports your interpretation and what might challenge it. If another person is involved, listen without claiming to know their hidden motives. Return later to what became clearer or changed.

Saint John Vianney, pray for me.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
John Vianney served as the parish priest of Ars, a small village in France. People traveled there to seek his counsel and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and he devoted long hours to hearing confessions. His prayer and patient attention helped people return to Christ. His example connects discernment with listening carefully and helping others respond faithfully to God.
